How to Launch Your Publishing Microbusiness

Adam Westbrook, Digital Producer and Journalist

Tuesday, July 24th  from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm.

There is no doubt that 2012 is an exciting time to be a journalist. While big media organisations are struggling to adapt in the digital age, independent journalists and publishers are quietly earning a living by building niche, profitable products that burnish their reputations as forward-thinking evangelists of the UK’s media landscape.

The idea that there is no money to be made in journalism is a myth. There are more opportunities than ever before for enterprising writers to establish themselves and make a living at the same time. If you want to make your mark as a journalist it is important to innovate, to lead, to be a self-starter.

The industry is in need of a radical overhaul. Whether you are a student, recent graduate or employee – in this class you will learn about manageable steps you can take right now to enhance your career in the digital age.

In this class we will cover:

  • Welcome to the age of the online publisher - and how it's different
  • How the journalism and publishing landscape has changed
  • Meet the people who are already making it work
  • Where are the opportunities?
  • A step by step guide to starting your own publishing microbusiness
  • The secret to successful entrepreneurial journalism

Adam Westbrook is a multimedia producer, film maker and lecturer based in London, UK. In 2009 he resigned from a newsroom job to go freelance and explore new opportunities opening up in the digital world. Since then he has become a lecturer at Kingston University’s journalism department, published three ebooks on journalism, spoken at dozens of conferences across Europe and started his own production business. To find out more about his work head over to his portfolio website, right here
